Far From My Home: ‘Machaan’

Year: 2019-20

In February, March, and April, Delhi’s evolving weather was experienced from the Machaan. This structure hosted quiet actions, cacophonous conversations, and gatherings that ebbed and flowed with the changing breeze. From its scaffoldings, telescopes were crafted, masks worn, stories told, and performances enacted.

The Machaan, part of the “Far from My Home” project by Murari Jha, became a space where diverse observations converged. Visitors were invited to explore the structure, listen to a multitude of voices, and share their observations of Delhi’s landscape and skies. Situated on the back lawn of Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi, and virtually at @farfrommyhome on Instagram, the Machaan served as a platform for collective reflection. Observations of Delhi were shared from the Machaan using the hashtags #farfrommyhome #Machaan120hour #postime120hours.

All activities took place on the Machaan at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi. The Machaan was realized within the framework of Five Million Incidents 2019-2020, conceived by Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan in collaboration with Raqs Media Collective.
